Our Heritage

The Original Ker & Downey Safaris: 'The Founders of Safari' est. 1946

Today, Ker & Downey is celebrated as the longest-existing safari outfitter in the world, and the standard-bearer for unsurpassed luxury in some of its last great wild places. So successful has the “K&D” name been that it has been brazenly borrowed by a number of copycat companies in Africa and the West. Yet to this day, no one has come close to emulating the standards, the rich experiences, or the peerless guiding of “The Original Ker & Downey Safaris”.

Like so many great ventures, Ker & Downey Safaris was born from a chance encounter. Donald Ker and Syd Downey, two big game hunters from Kenya, had been fighting with the British in Ethiopia shortly before the fall of Addis Ababa in 1941. Syd had just been released by the Italians and was celebrating at a local hotel when he bumped into Donald Ker. With one car and a lot of bravura, the pair made a plan to establish “the best safari company the world has ever known”.

Binks Safaris is the culmination of almost 100 years of experience in the safari industry. Alan Binks guided his first safari in 1969 and after over five decades of successfully managing and leading safaris throughout Sub-Saharan Africa, he's now joined by children, Tony and Julia - making a formidable trio.
Alan’s introduction to African wildlife began in 1967 whilst managing a research study into the potential for ranching indigenous wild antelopes. Observing animal behaviour and their interaction within the environment means that a safari with Alan is not just about seeing the Big Five, but learning to understand the complexities of nature, particularly focused on his passion for elephants and birdlife.
He then went on to work for Abercrombie & Kent for some years before joining Ker & Downey. He has been a partner of Ker & Downey since 1980, and served on the Board for 24 years. With his immense wildlife knowledge, Alan is regarded as a fundi (expert) by many of his peers and other Ker & Downey guides.

Tony received his Honours degree in Zoology with conservation from the University of Bristol and then travelled the world extensively and experimented with different roles and jobs which would get him into the wild spaces he loved; working in wildlife research, fisheries, film-making, conservation, at all levels of tourism lodge and camp operations and construction, before finding his calling in his father's footsteps: guiding. An exceptionally seasoned guide, Tony's experience spans the wildest corners of sub-Saharan Africa,

Julia started her safari career as a lodge manager for a portfolio of luxury lodges throughout East Africa - this experience gave her an immense understanding of the intimate workings of lodges and how to create outstanding experiences for her clients. After a number of years living this nomadic life she transitioned to a sales role and for the last decade has been meticulously planning safaris all over Africa; all the classic safari areas in sub-Saharan Africa as well as places like Ethiopia, Madagascar, Morocco and Egypt.
